How Hail Is Formed

When the surface has water and it's exposed to the sun, it will vaporize and elevate. Water vapors will come together condensing into clouds when encountering cold air called the condensation nuclei, then turn into raindrops and start to rain. If cold air does not create condensation nuclei, water vapors will turn into ice or snow. If the temperature drops significantly, it will create a large mass of ice known as hail. Quickly developed thunderstorm clouds, known as cumulonimbus clouds, with high cloud formation along with strong updrafts and downdrafts in the clouds and massive water vapor in the clouds will form and produce hail.

Hail clouds form quickly, creating convective clouds. Convective clouds, or cumuliform clouds, look like a pile of cotton balls. They form when the air is warm and humid and elevates through air in the atmosphere. As these clouds rise or drop, the warm air drives strong updrafts. These clouds are very thick reaching more than 17 km and might carry 30,000 tons of hail floating through the air. These clouds usually appear in early spring and during the summer. Hail clouds are very tall and have strong convective air movements in the clouds and a considerable level of moisture.

The Conditions Needed To Form Hail

Cumulonimbus clouds thrive in temperatures that allow individual droplets to freeze at approximately -12 to -16°C. It's necessary to have a strong wind shear. The cloud's vertical thickness cannot be less than 6 to 8 km. Cumulonimbus clouds are high in water content which is approximately 3 – 8 grams per cubic meter and an accumulation tract of liquid supercooled water above the maximum ascent velocity. There should be a strong and uneven updraft within the cloud that's generally 10 – 20 m/s.

The Impressive Features

Strong Localization - The impact area of a hailstorm is approximately tens of meters to thousands of meters wide and hundreds of meters more than 10 kilometers long.
The Duration – A violent hailstorm usually lasts for 2 to 10 minutes with a few lasting for 30 minutes.
Influenced By The Terrain – the more complicated the terrain is, the better the chances are for hail to take place.
Inter-Annual Occurrences

There are times when hailstorms will happen quite a few times in one area while other times, these storms will only happen once in a while or not at all.

A Large Range Of Areas

These storms can happen in a large range of areas from subtropical to temperate locations. In most cases, these storms happen in temperate zones mostly in mid-latitude continental areas. Also, they occur in the north more often than in the south. These storms happen more often in the mountains than in the plains, and inland versus coastal areas. This is due to extensive cold air activities and regions.

Seasonally

Hail normally takes place between April and October. This is when both warm air and cold air are more active, making it easier for hail to form. In general, hail happens in the spring, summer, and fall.

The Time Frames

There are times of day when hail storms are more active than other times. Mostly, these storms will take place in the afternoon and evening because the convection is strongest during that time. Convection is the upward atmospheric motion that moves whatever is in the air.

Helping Crops And Plants After A Hailstorm

If you have gone through a rough patch caused by hailstorms that have damaged your orchards, trees, and sometimes your brand-new car! There are some steps you can take to get them back in good condition. In this article, we will go over some ideas to care for your orchard and trees after experiencing a massive hailstorm.

Hailstorms & Your Response Time

If you have trees that have been seriously damaged by a hailstorm, the best thing you can do is cut them down and plant new trees in their place. After a hailstorm, if fruit trees have broken or fallen limbs or the majority of leaves are damaged, the photosynthetic products created will be significantly less. Chances are there will be a lower count of nutrients in the tree which will affect the tree's ability to produce fruit.

Branches and/or bark have been destroyed, the tree can suffer from wounds that will allow disease to penetrate causing rot as well as extensive trunk or branch diseases. Fruit bags have fallen off the tree injuring the fruit or affecting the quality of the fruit. The fruit can be damaged by anthracnose, verticillium, black and red dot disease, and other issues. The bottom line, you will end up with rotted fruit.

If you have experienced damage like this, you will need to take steps to bring the trees back around and get back to normal growth.

Follow some advice and get your orchard in healthy condition one more time:

Prune The Trees And Clean Up Your Orchard

You need to remove branches that have been seriously injured, broken, or somewhat torn from the trees. Remove leaves whether new or old that have been damaged, and any fruit that is of no value anymore. You can thin irregular leaves, branches, and fruit for centralized processing to prevent the spreading of diseases from surfacing during mild or rainy conditions. Centralized processing is performed on a tree or a cluster of trees in one location.

Spray Trees To Prevent Diseases

Fallen apples and leaves will cause wounds on your apple trees leading to rot. The tree will become weak and not able to fight off diseases or infections if you don't address the problem as quickly as possible. after the storm. Spray plant regulators, foliar fertilizers, and disease prevention agents within 2 to 3 days after the storm. If leaves are seriously damaged, spray large amounts of boron foliar fertilizer. Potassium, foliar fertilizer is used to promote growth and help the tree recover. You can protect fruit trees caused by pathogens and diseases by spraying. Also, apply medications to dry and protect the trunks of your trees. Spraying will also help the tree heal and start growing again.

Note - Foliar feeding is giving plants fertilizer directly to the leaves. Plants then absorb needed nutrients through the leaves.

Apply additional fertilizer to help your fruit trees come back. Stay away from fertilizers that are too thick, In the early stages use a good fruit fertilizer. If you have questions or concerns, reach out to arborists or a reputable garden facility for added advice to make sure you are using the right formulas for different trees.

Take Extra Care To Protect Fruit Trees

When pruning, pay attention to fruits with minor wounds as the fruit might survive. By nature, young fruit can mature and continue to grow.

Loosen Up Hard Surface Soil

Due to rain, wind, and hail, soil can become hard and in poor condition, especially its ability to provide good penetration of heat. In turn, hard soil can be a problem for the root systems.

In order to get the root system to continue growing, you need to irrigate using a good soil treatment promptly to loosen the soil. There are several formulas on the market to loosen the soil and help the roots continue to push through and grow. You need a good soil loosening and conditioning agent along with brassinolide, a water-soluble amino acid fertilizer, and a root irrigation treatment to improve the root system's activities.

After a hailstorm has passed, you need to take steps to restore the normal growth of your trees as soon as possible to guarantee next year's production of fruits. Once you have restored your orchard and things have taken a turn for the better, it's time to start thinking about planting.

How To Protect Your Orchard After A Hailstorm

If you find hailstones on the ground in your orchard, get rid of them as soon as possible. Before tilling, apply a herbicide containing ammonium sulfate and potassium chloride. This treatment will stop damage from unwanted plants growing in the area. Remove hailstones on your trees, they can cause damage or harm someone passing by when they fall off. Prune the branches of lower limbs as well as damaged leaves.

You need to replace damaged or fallen hail netting that was damaged during the storm to continue protecting the trees during future storms. Irrigate or water the orchard to help trees and plants recover. When purchasing more netting, choose a service that offers fast shipping so you can get back to work.

Future Protection For Your Orchard

If you haven't yet, install hail netting to protect your crops in the future. For great results, suspend tarps between poles, it's an inexpensive way to protect your plants from future hailstorms. Also, you can install ballasting and weights on the plants to keep them from falling over from high winds.

Install hail guards with hooks around your trees' trunks to prevent future damage as hail guards will protect the trunks and branches. These protective devices will safeguard the trees as well as fruits from being damaged during hailstorms.

Hail netting can be placed over an entire orchard and reduce hail damage on trees as well as protect fruit from a hailstorm during harvesting time. A high-quality netting is made from high-strength polyethylene. It will prevent tearing. The netting is coated with UV inhibitors on the outside and flame retardant on the inside.
