Increase Growth While Protecting Conifers Using Tree Tubes

Conifer trees are beautiful evergreens gracing many landscapes while giving the surrounding area many ecological benefits. Young conifer saplings face many challenges from environmental stress to incredible harm caused by wildlife along with an onslaught of weeds.

In this article, we will cover information regarding tree tubes also known as tree shelters. These shelters or guards are designed to protect conifers while allowing for healthy growth We will discuss the benefits offered by these mechanisms, what you should know about the different kinds of tree tubes, as well as installation and maintenance procedures that should be followed. Young conifers struggle against many challenges making them very vulnerable. Some issues young conifers face include:

Wildlife

There are several animals that threaten the well-being of conifers including deer, rabbits, and other herbivores leading to significant damage to the trees.

Difficult Outdoor Elements

Conifers deal with snow, frost, and high winds that can break new limbs and trunks leaving the trees deformed.

Competition From Weeds And Other Plants

Weeds and other plants are serious competitors cutting off sunlight, water, and nutrients from these small saplings. Tree tubes can remove many threats by shielding the saplings from harm. By removing the threats and difficulties, young conifers will flourish and grow.

The Benefits From Tree Tubes

Conifer Protection: Tree tubes protect form a barrier to protect young trees from animals and damage caused by mechanical landscaping equipment.

An Improved Microclimate: These tree tubes form a greenhouse effect inside the tubes to increase growth by maintaining higher humidity and increasing temperature levels.

Reduced Herbicide Damage: Tree tubes will protect young trees from airborne herbicide sprays which are often found in mixed landscaping.

Stability And Support: Tree tubes provide structural support to help conifers grow straight and tall during windy conditions and areas known for high winds.

Different Tree Tubes

There are different kinds of tree tubes for different needs:

Plastic Mesh Tubes: These tubes are flexible and allow air and moisture to move around the tree reducing the chances of fungal diseases. Plastic mesh tubes are lightweight and easy to install.

The Pros - They are not expensive and offer good airflow.

The Cons - this kind of tube is not particularly durable and is less protective against severe weather conditions.

Solid Plastic Tubes: Tree tubes offer a more controlled environment and better protection against animals and severe weather. They are taller and thicker than mesh tubes.

Pros – A better level of microclimate control, durable and superior protection against animals.

Cons – The tubes are more expensive and can become overheated if not properly ventilated

Biodegradable Tubes: These tubes are environmentally friendly. They are made from natural materials that will decompose in time, eliminating the need to remove them.

Pros – The bottom line, the material is Eco-friendly.

Cons – This product is more expensive than others and the lifespan can vary.

What is the right tree tube for your conifers?

To get the correct tree tube for your conifers depends on some factors:

The Threat Level – Determine the threat levels in your area. Whether the activities of animals are on the rise or your area experiences severe weather conditions. In these cases, you might need to select stronger, sturdier protective tubes.

Size And Species of Trees – Conifers come in different sizes and growing rates. Make sure to choose the right size of tubes to accommodate the growth of your conifers over a couple of seasons.

Environmental Impacts - If environmental impact is one of your concerns, choose biodegradable tubes.

Budget -Take the cost and life expectancy of the tubes to determine the benefits.

Installation

Installing the tubes correctly is extremely important to get all the added benefits of tree tubes. Follow these steps for the best results:

Prepare the area: Clear the entire area of debris and weeds before planting the conifers.: This will help the tubes sit securely and provide a good environment for growth.

Plant The Conifers: Plant the conifers making sure the root systems are covered and the soil is compacted around the base.

Install The Tubes: Carefully, place the tubes over the conifer, making sure it reaches well above the sapling. If the tube is taller, use a stake to support the tube.

Stabilize And Secure The Tube: Use ties or ground staples to secure the bottom of the tube to the soil and make sure it's upright and stable.

Regular Checks And Maintenance

Check the tubes on a regular basis and make any adjustments if needed.

Adjust And Remove
-As the conifer continues to grow, raise the height of the tube or remove the tree if it's strong enough to withstand the outside pressures.

In Conclusion

Tree tubes are great choices for promoting the growth of young conifers. By understanding the needs of the saplings, carefully selecting the right tree tubes, and maintaining the tubes, you can increase the survival rates and the health of these future incredible trees. Whether you will be working with a large number of trees or just a few for your landscape, using tree tubes will be a very important part of your trees' care and growth.
