Seedling to Tree: An Overview

When you decide to grow trees from seeds, it requires plant propagation from a process known as permaculture. This is a process of using land, resources, and the environment without leaving a trail of destruction in your path. Maybe your dream is planting a large grove of trees and years later, when you are older, walking through your forest of trees knowing it took a long time to make it happen but they will be there long after you are gone.

Enjoy walking through your grove and listening to birds perched on branches singing their songs while you breathe in clean air provided by your trees. In order to make your dream come true, you will have to plant quite a few trees. Make sure to select species of trees that will last a long time, not cultivars that might last a mere 20 years if you're lucky.

Stay clear of trees that need a great deal of work and attention. Choose trees that are not susceptible to diseases and do not require a specific fertilizer to grow. You want to incorporate the principles behind permaculture by working with nature, not against it. From the very beginning, you have to run soil tests and then choose trees that work the best for your climate, are tough enough to withstand diseases and/or pests, and will flourish for many years to come.

To achieve your ideal trees, you will need a basic understanding of tree and seed biology. You need to educate yourself on your environment and climate and reach out to those who are very knowledgeable in the care and health of trees such as an arborist. The more you learn about trees, the better your chances are to grow large, magnificent trees in your grove.

Let's talk about seeds and why they are the reason we have trees. Like other plants, trees grow from seeds. Creating a tree from a seed is not only fun but miraculous! Because seeds are very inexpensive, you can grow as many trees as your heart desires.

Not only will growing trees from seeds give you the opportunity to help improve the environment but will also let you choose the best trees for your area.

Trees Versus Traits

If you gather seeds from your favorite tree, it's highly unlikely you will end up with the same traits as the parent tree. You might wonder why plants grown from seed will always be different from the parent tree. Read on. As an example – Fruit trees require cross-pollination to produce the fruit. The seeds from your cultivar will have the combination of the tree and the pollinator that fertilized the flower.

Most fruit trees grown from seeds, like an apple tree, will not produce the traits of the parent tree. The only way you might stand a chance would be planting thousands of seeds and hoping one of them is a match. That's just how it goes. If you are determined to have a tree from seed that's just like the parent, the only true way that can happen is cloning the tree which is done by grafting.

The Best Trees Grown From Seeds

Any tree can be grown from seeds and if you are lucky, their fruit or nuts will be just as good if not better than those grown on the original tree. In many cases, you will not have to plant tons of seeds for great results.

Through some research, you will discover that trees that are self-pollinators are more likely to give you the results you want including the size of the fruit and the production rates. This is also known as growing true from seed. Some factors might come into play such as other pollinators that might be in the area.

Nitrogen-fixing is the process that converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia and then absorbed by the tree. There are species that are easy to grow from seeds including black or honey locusts, alder, and seaberry trees.

Options For Growing Trees From Seeds

There are two methods for growing trees from seeds. The first is the natural way consisting of sowing the seeds outside in the fall or autumn months and the second way is assisted germination which is performed inside using techniques to copy nature so the seeds will germinate.

First off, you have to know that most species of trees are dormant and need a period of stratification before they will germinate. Stratification needs cold, moist conditions and in some cases followed by warm, moist conditions.

Seeds must go through the winter and then germinate in the spring. Without the right conditions, many seeds will not germinate. This is why plants depend on large numbers of seeds so they can survive.

Sowing outside in the ground will give seeds the cold conditions they need. Cold stratification can lead to the loss of many seeds due to unreliable conditions or eaten by small animals like rodents.

Growing seeds inside will give you the chance to control the environment and help germinate many more seeds. Take a walk through a forest to find out how nature works. Seeds have been growing into trees since the beginning of time without our assistance.

For seeds to germinate naturally takes nature's hand. In most cases, when seeds are sown, they will start to germinate in the spring. Autumn planting outside takes place either in the ground or in containers. This must happen before temperatures drop below 8° C/45° F.

Containers Or Pots

Sow the seeds in a container or pot then place them outside in an area that is sheltered from wind but making sure they get direct sunlight. Seeds need freezing weather, cold, and snow in order to soften their outer coats to germinate in the spring. Therefore, you do not have to worry about these conditions, it's a natural process.

You can cover the pots or containers with wire netting for protection from birds and animals. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, place them in small pots, trays, or cells and move them to the greenhouse for protection. This process is recommended for large seeds like oaks, chestnuts, and walnuts. These large seeds do not do well if stored and can easily dry out. The best advice, sow them directly into deep containers where they can remain for the rest of the season.

Nursery Beds Or Seed Beds

Native plants can be directly placed outside in raised nursery beds or seed beds You will have to provide shelter and build a windbreak or provide required shading. Build a wooden frame as well as a raised bed to increase the soil level by 8 inches. Just make sure the bed is free of weeds. It will need fine tilth and retain a moisture-retention surface with small even particles. Tilth will guarantee good contact between the soil and the seeds so moisture will be absorbed for germination.

Tilth is tilled soil for sowing seeds. You can bring in rotted leaf mold which will help soil-born fungi that will provide better growth and improve the soil structure.

In A Final Note

Do Not allow the germinating seeds to dry out and protect them from animals. Cover them with fleece which is a fabric made from polyester. You can also use leaves to help prevent heaving. Heaving is when the seedlings are pushed out of the ground by ice formed on the surface.

Leave the seedlings in place to grow for a short time in the seed bed and then move them to where you want them to grow when they are ready. Direct seeding on your site is a way to grow trees from seeds. You will need a lot of seeds in the area where you want the trees to grow.

Prepare the soil with plants that improve the soil. Use green manure plants. Once the soil is ready, loosen it for sowing by allowing animals, like pigs, to graze and dig up the green manure plants. This is the best method for preparing fruit trees.

Sowing the plants includes spreading and leaving left over pulp that has been squeezed out for juice or cider. During fermentation, germination inhibitors will be broken down so trees can start to germinate.

As plants start to sprout, many will die off but the best will survive. By nature, trees grow in their respective places so they will readily adapt to the soil and the climate. Use the best plants for grafting and transplant those that are growing too close together.
