How To Successfully Grow Grapevines Using Grow Tubes

Protecting your grapevines is the first and most important part of a successful vineyard. Whether you are a viticulturist* or a novice with a small garden of grapes, it takes a lot of work and care to grow healthy, delicious grapes! A viticulturist is someone very knowledgeable in the cultivation of grapes. Grow tubes are very popular for protecting young grapevines from many environmental threats. In this article we will discuss the benefits of using grow tubes, why it's important to know the different kinds of grow tubes, and how to install these tubes successfully. You will learn good maintenance practices for healthy, productive grapevines.

What Are Grow Tubes?

Grow tubes are often referred to as vine guards or shelters. The cylindrical shape encloses the grapevines to protect them from animals, pests, and harsh weather conditions. These tubes create a microclimate to induce fast, healthy growth.

Grow Tube Benefits:

Wildlife And Pest Protection: Grow tubes will protect young vines from wildlife including deer and rabbits while warding off insects. Left unattended, wildlife and insects will destroy or damage your plants.

Microclimate Growth: Inside the grow tube, the microclimate process traps heat around the plant to accelerate growth by increasing the growing season and protecting the plant from continual changes in temperature.

Protection From Weeds And Chemicals: If sprays are used to eliminate weeds growing around the base, the grow tubes will protect the plants from the herbicides in the spray.

Increased Survival And Growth Rates: Studies have shown that grapevines protected by grow tubes have a higher survival rate and more active growth in their developmental years.

Kinds Of Grow Tubes

Read on to discover the different kinds of grow tubes and what they are used for.

Plastic Grow Tubes: These tubes are each made more often than other designs. They are made from a variety of plastics and come in different diameters and heights to fit different vine sizes and training systems.

Pros – Long-lasting, reliable, inexpensive, and usually available.

Cons – Will degrade under UV exposure, and might have to be replaced after a few seasons.

Biodegradable Grow Tubes - Thanks to a growing industry and sustainable practices, biodegradable grow tubes have become very popular. They are made from natural materials including rice husks and wheat straw. Over time, these tubes will decompose, eliminating the need to dispose of them.

Pros – Environmentally friendly and do not need to be removed.

Cons
– More expensive and have different decomposition rates, depending on the climate.

Mesh Grow Tubes: These tubes are made from a flexible mesh allowing air to circulate around the plant reducing the risk of overheating. It provides some pest protection without stifling or harming growth.

Pros - Great air circulation, flexible installation

Cons – Less protection from severe weather or large pests.

Selecting The Right Grow Tube

When selecting the right grow tube for your vineyard, there are certain factors to consider:

The Vineyard's Location and Climate – different climates require different kinds of protection. Cooler climates might require insulated tubes while warmer climates might require mesh tubes to prevent overheating.

Wildlife And Pests – To protect the plant from wildlife or pests will require choosing the right material and kind of tube. You should ask a representative at your local garden center or the Home Depot.

Budget – Plastic tubes are less expensive while biodegradable might save money in labor and disposal.

Sustainable Needs – If your goal is an organic certification or reducing environmental impact, biodegradable tubes will be your best choice.

Installation: Following good installation practices will make a difference in the effectiveness of your grow tubes.

Prepare The Site: You have to clean the area of all debris and weeds before planting. Preparation will help the grow tubes sit securely and keep pests from being able to settle near the base of the vine.

Plant The Vines: The grapevines must be planted as specified by the training system and spacing requirements. Make sure the roots are completely covered and the soil is firmly packed.

Install The Grow Tubes:
Carefully place the tube over the vine. Make sure it's straight and covers the entire plant up to its desired height. For taller tubes, use stakes for support to keep them standing straight.

Secure The Tubes: Use ties or ground staples to secure the bottom of the tube to prevent it from moving. If you have to use stakes, attach the tube to the stake using ties or clips.

Monitor And Maintenance: After the grow tubes are installed, you should monitor them to ensure they are working well. Perform all required maintenance if something needs repairing.

Ventilation – Check to ensure the tubes are getting good ventilation to prevent mold and fungal growth.

Check Irrigation – Make sure the watering system is functioning properly and the water is reaching the plant's roots.

Monitoring Growth – Regularly monitor the plant's growth inside the tube and make adjustments to the height or remove the plant when it's the right time.

Check For Pests – Keep an eye out for signs of pests and alter the protection levels if needed.

In Conclusion

Grow tubes are a fantastic tool for vineyards and even smaller gardens with grapevines. By choosing the right grow tubes and installing them properly, you will have succulent grapes when harvest time arrives. Growers can greatly improve the survival and health of their grapevines leading to better yields and healthier grapevines.
